How Emperor Palpatine Used His Market's Fears and Desires To Crush The Republic
I want to dispel a myth right now that marketing is some form of “manipulation” or is somehow unethical.
My own definition of ethical marketing is simply trying to convince someone that you can solve their problem with your own product or service. That’s it.
Some might argue that the “convincing” part is a form of manipulation. Fair enough. But how can you get someone to buy your product without convincing them first?
Now, there IS some unethical marketing out there. I’m not arguing that point.
A great example is from Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
Now, I personally think that Palpatine was a great character (minus the complete mess that was The Rise of Skywalker).
However, Palpatine’s methods were true manipulation or unethical marketing, where you convince your customer you can solve their problem…
But in reality, you have no intention of doing so.
I don’t condone it obviously. But there are a few things that we can learn from the emperor about convincing people to do something to the point where they are enthusiastic about letting you solve their problem.
Think about it. How did Palpatine bring down an entire galactic Republic?
And not only bring it down, but have its own people vote for the Republic’s fall?
Well, he couldn’t do it by force. He needed to corrode the Republic from within.
And he did this by learning everything he could about his enemies.
Palpatine could not have won without first understanding how his enemies moved. He also learned about their beliefs. Their motivations. What drove them.
And he studied everyone… …from Padme Amidala who, by confiding in Palpatine while he was a Senator and the Supreme Chancellor, unknowingly became a spy for him, always letting him know what others in the Senate were thinking...
….to Count Dooku who led the Separatists and always informed the Dark Lord of their every move…
...to Anakin Skywalker, who always let him know what the Jedi were up to while also sharing how he was becoming disillusioned with how they did things.
And every single person I listed…
…was HAPPY to follow his lead.
He used the information he collected to target his messaging for each person.
For example, Anakin wanted enough power to save Padme, and Palpatine was THE ONLY PERSON who promised him a way to do so. (He also constantly told Anakin how great of a Jedi he was, which was exactly the kind of ego-stroking he needed).
… As for Padme and the Senate, he promised them safety and security as the Chancellor;
… For the Separatists, he ensured the fall of the Republic and that they would seize control of the galaxy, using his influence as a Sith Lord.
Palpatine ultimately had unknowing spies everywhere, whether it was his Sith operatives, senators like Padme, or Jedi like Anakin.
By learning about their greatest desires and assuring them that HE would be the one to get them all what they want…
...they were EAGER to give him everything he needed to bring down the Republic for good.
Padme and the Senate awarded him with great power as a Supreme Chancellor and later as an Emperor...
...Count Dooku provided him with a Separatist Droid Army...
...Anakin gave him fierce loyalty....
...and Palpatine used every shred of intelligence he gathered to his advantage.
And this next part is very important.
He never relied on assumptions. He always gathered intelligence from all vantage points.
Based on this knowledge, he always knew what was happening at ALL times.
When performing customer research, it’s important to pull from various sources. But maybe more importantly, you should ALWAYS BE LEARNING about your customers. What are their dreams? Their fears? And if possible, their dark desires? (Because we all have those, don’t we?)
Learning all you can about your customers can allow you to construct a message, product, or service that they simply can't ignore.
One more thing. At no time could Palpatine actually stop his intelligence gathering because conditions were always changing. Just like your customers.
What would have happened if Palpatine one day just stopped gathering intel? Would he still have won?
Possibly, but I doubt it.
Don’t ever assume that just because you know your customers today, that you’ll know them tomorrow.
